-for a desktop computer try PCLinuxOS(very stable, you will never...and I mean never have to press the restart button,if you know the top,ps,kill commands, start's in 1 min, shut's down in 20 sec...and I have just 512 RAM)
-for a laptop try Open Suse -kde4(it's not my favorite, but is very stable and with other distributions I had problems with the drivers-my laptop has no official support for linux, but Open Suse had all the drivers it needed)
Linux it's very good for the internet, programing, movies, downloads, music and no problems with viruses or spyware...but for some work you will still need windows...it's true.On my laptop I have a dual boot windows xp and Open Suse, and on my home computer I use just PCLinuxOS.
Anyway try linux, find your own fav distribution(depends on the computer you install on,too)...it's free and much much better then windows(xp is slower and vista...maybe sp2 will be better).

Try Linux:<br

For me, OSX starts up in 30 seconds and shuts down in 5 seconds. It's great.

You could install Mac OSX if you want an UNIX system that’s as simple to use as Windows :P<br
